👈 Swipe left to look at the near-infrared and mid-infrared images and compare them with the companion optical photo. See any difference? You will find that the obscuring dust is much less evident in the 2MASS and @NASA Spitzer pictures. This is good illustration of how infrared light can pierce through obscuring dust and why astronomers rely on infrared measurements to study star formation, which typically occurs in dusty interstellar environments. Stunning image of the Stephan's Quintet, a visual group of five galaxies. About 300 million light-years away, only four galaxies of the group are actually locked in a cosmic dance of repeated close encounters.
The four interacting galaxies (NGC 7319, 7318A, 7318B, and 7317) have an overall yellowish cast and tend to have distorted loops and tails, grown under the influence of disruptive gravitational tides. But the bluish galaxy at the upper left (NGC 7320) is much closer than the others. A mere 40 million light-years distant, it isn't part of the interacting group. In fact, individual stars in the foreground galaxy can be seen in the sharp Hubble image, hinting that it is much closer than the others. Stephan's Quintet lies within the boundaries of the high flying constellation Pegasus.

Tonight’s moon set from Tempe shot from my apartment complex’s pool. A nice small cloud crossed the disc and lit up quite nicely. I think atmospheric effects add a lot to moon shots and make them unique. Hope you all enjoy!
This is Uranus from my backyard! I think I did manage to capture some of its cool minty color. It is TINY in the night sky, the equivalent size of a soccer ball at 8 miles!!
I calculated it would span only 20 pixels across my webcam and this measured right on. The equivalent focal length of my telescope with x3 Barlow lens is 2.4 METERS. Uranus is out at a distance of 1.7 billion miles! It takes its light almost 3 hours to even reach us.
In the telescope it was just at the edge of being non-stellar. I could just barely tell it was a tiny tiny ball and not just a bright star. Wow! #astronomy#astrophotography#space#nature#nasa#solarsystem#telescope
IC5067 - The Pelican Nebula
This is the inner core of the larger pelican nebula. In this close-up view, it is easy to pick out the chaotic nebulosity caused by star formation. The most famous of these features is Herbig-Haro 555, which sits at the tip of the long tendril in the top right of the image. The opposing jets give the appearance of a hammerhead shark viewed from the top. These are outflowing gasses emitted along the rotational axis of a forming star. The jets are actually being curved by competing stellar winds in the area. These winds are helping to carve out the interesting and evolving nebulosity. There are several more of these objects in the field. Though they are less conspicuous, a discerning eye can pick them out.
This image totaled 17.7 hours of exposure through hydrogen (Ha) and Oxygen (OIII) filters and a little bit of RGB. I took some creative liberty in the process by creating a typical Hubble Palette (SHO) look from bicolor data. I hope it comes across reasonably well.
